The Lochaber Music School was set up in 1987 to provide high quality professional string tuition in Lochaber. From relatively small beginnings, the work of the school has developed and now caters for a wide range of students from all parts of Lochaber and beyond.

A major Scottish Arts Council Lottery award in 1997 enabled the School to develop its outreach work programme and the Lochaber Music School now runs an annual series of popular and highly successful music workshop weekends in a variety of locations around Lochaber and neighbouring areas. These workshops attract a large number of players of all ages and abilities who value the highly professional coaching that is the hallmark of the courses. These weekends also offer players the opportunity to meet socially and enjoy the company of other musicians.

Good musical training can encourage and enrich children’s physical, mental and social development, providing them with a wide range of academic and social skills. The importance of sound individual tuition is never underestimated, but great emphasis is placed within the Music School on the value of playing together in small chamber groups and also in larger orchestras. This is of particular importance in our remote and predominantly rural area, where opportunities to meet and enjoy music-making with other players are often few and far between.
